Finding Others Going Through a Divorce

It may feel like the end of the world when you're going through a divorce, and in a way, it is. It's the end of the hopes and dreams and plans that you shared with your partner, but your situation is not unique and you are not alone in dealing with the anger, fear, frustration and other negative emotions and situations that are an intimate part of the divorce process. There are others who are going through the same exact thing, and who may be able to help you cope and gain a sense of perspective.

Whatever you do, don't turn to your attorney for this support. He or she may be most willing to accommodate your need to vent, at the rate of hundreds of dollars per hour. Your time and money would be better spent seeking professional counseling to help sort out your feelings. Better yet, your counselor may have a group counseling session that you could join for an even more reasonable rate. Check into community resources for divorce support groups. Your church may also offer free counseling or divorce support groups to help you survive this difficult time with your faith, composure and dignity intact.

The members in a support group are all undergoing the same experience, but from different perspectives. Their travails may put your own into perspective. At the least, they will have understanding and sympathy for your plight, and can offer their moral support and encouragement, as well as solid, practical advice from someone who's been there, done that. A support group can offer you the opportunity to see beyond your own pain to provide comfort and support to others, and ultimately help you to heal.
