What Can a Divorce Support Group Do For You?

If your marriage or relationship is floundering, you may want to seek out a divorce support group in your community that can help you sort out your feelings as you enter into this new stage in your life. By communicating with others and listening to the stories they tell, you will learn that there is still hope. Although such a group can and should not replace other traditional avenues such as a therapist, marriage counselor, psychologist or clergyman, it can nonetheless be a very useful part of your overall healing process. It will undoubtedly help you realize that you’re not alone in your struggles to create a new life for yourself.

By listening to others talk about their experiences and perceptions, you can learn a lot about how to handle your own situation. You may also pick up valuable information about which divorce attorney to use, how to divide your physical possessions, what to tell your children, how to regain a sense of control, how to enjoy dating once again and a myriad of other topics. Support groups are usually affiliated with hospitals, religious groups and community centers. However, online groups can be equally beneficial. In the unlikely event that none are available, you can always start one yourself!

If you participate in a self-help group, you will quite quickly come to realize that you can be totally honest with the other participants as they have all been (or are) in the exact position as are you, and their perspective on what is happening to you will be invaluable. Who knows? You could just emerge from this experience feeling better about yourself and with an entire set of new friends who stand behind you!
