Helping Others Dealing With Divorce

The stress of a divorce can adversely effect a person both physically and mentally. It can change their self image and their outlook on life. They can become afraid of the future, especially if they have been married a relative long time.

Don't let them cut themselves off from all of their friends. Be there to talk about what they are going through. It might be fun to get together with two other people and have a foursome for coffee once a week. This will give them an opportunity to talk about their problems in a relaxed atmosphere. Exercise is a good way to control their stress level. You might arrange to go walking together and that would help release some anger and upset and also release natural chemicals in the body to help balance their mood.

Divorce is like a rollercoaster. One day they are up, the next day they are down. Try to keep then from dwelling on the things they cannot control. They should try to forget the past and look to the future. Try to have some fun. Remember, laughter is the best medicine. No one expects them to get right back into the swing of things but they do expect them to try to be pleasant and not talk about anything but the divorce.

In this day when so many people are getting divorced, it shouldn't be too difficult to find new people in the same boat. There are groups on the Internet or through your local chamber of commerce who can recommend someone in your area and your circumstances that are looking for a new friend. Make your future what you want it to be.
