Ways to Forget Your Ex

To avoid people, places, and things from your past is the advise given to overcome addiction. But what about when you want to get over someone from a past relationship? The answer is pretty much the same when you want to get over a relationship. While this is easy to say, in reality, it is often as difficult as breaking an addiction. It takes a conscious effort and hard work. But unlike with drug or alcohol addiction, there is no twelve step program or rehab facility to help you along. As the old song says, you've got to walk that lonesome valley by yourself. But how?

One of the main suggestions is to find something else to get involved in to take your mind off your ex. Initially, avoiding places and activities that you did with or associate with your ex is a good place to start. While starting a "rebound" or an "out of spite" relationship is not wise, being socially active is. It's kind of like getting back up after falling off a bike. Learning from your past experiences is important and not harping on the past is also important. You need to get over your ex and get on with your life.

It is also important not to demonize your ex. By demonizing them, you empower them to keep effecting your life, keeping part of the relationship alive in a negative way and keeping you from fully moving on. The emotional break needs to be total, with no residual emotion. Taking on a new hobby or activity can also be helpful, as can spending time with or at least communicating with friends and family. The important thing is to be good to yourself and move on with your life.
