Divorce can be a hard and very painful thing for anyone to go through. You think you can prepare yourself for everything that will happen during this time in your life but you still will try. We will all try to get through this a easy as possible. You will need to get prepared no matter which one of you ask for the divorce. This can be a mental and financially trying time so you will need to take a few steps to help protect yourself.
You may want to find a safe place for you and any family members you think might be in harms way. Then you will want to find out what you owe, make a list of any and all bills you will have. Then make another list of the things you have that are paid in full. Make you and your spouse a copy of each of very important documents such as bank account, savings account, retirement statements, tax paper (house and income taxes both) credit cards and any and all statements you will need to prove what you owe and what you own. This will help you with figuring out your finances.
You will also want to try and get credit started in just your name. If you have a job do not quit, this will help build your independence and prove you will be financially okay. Then find a good lawyer that has your best interest as their top priority. This may take a least two months or longer and will end with a lot of eye opening experience.
